There are many influences in a student’s career that shape their overall experience throughout school. Some obvious influences include teachers, counselors, and mentors that help a student in the best way they can inside of the school system itself. But, many factors outside of the school system can affect how a student preforms. There were two factors in my school experience that influenced me outside of the classroom and those were sports and my family, especially my sister.
A lot of times, sports are looked at as a distraction from school. From the long practices and having no time for homework, it is sometimes hard to balance sports and school at the same time. It is for all of these reasons that I found sports helped me throughout school. With so little time in a day I found that I had to learn how to manage my time and remain organized so that I would be able to fit all I needed to in. It also motivated me to do better so that I would not let my team down. My school had a strict set of requirements to maintain status on any sports team, so I worked hard to keep up with these requirements. Sports helped me because they gave me structure so that I would not feel overwhelmed.
Another outside influence that shaped my school career was my family. My family was never one to be on my case about homework and test while I was in school. They always gave me the freedom to manage school the way that I felt comfortable and that is part of the reason I think I did so well. With no pressure to preform I felt that I owed them my best work. My family pushed me to work hard so that I would make them proud and show that I knew how to handle myself in the school environment on my own without having to rely on someone to push me.
Although the influences of teachers and schools have a large influence on the performance of students, there are also many outside factors that can have an influence. In my case there was my rigorous sports schedule and my laid back family.
